Description

Homemade Hush Puppies are a delicious Southern-style fried cornmeal dough, perfect as a side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add chopped onion, buttermilk, and egg to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  3. Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 365°F (185°C).
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
  5. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add chopped jalapeños to the batter.
  • Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure crispy hush puppies.
  • These can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven.
