Homemade Hush Puppies are a delicious Southern-style fried cornmeal dough, perfect as a side dish or snack.

- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Add chopped onion, buttermilk, and egg to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 365°F (185°C).
- Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot.
- Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add chopped jalapeños to the batter.
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure crispy hush puppies.
- These can be made ahead of time and reheated in the oven.
