- 1.75 cups Cold buttermilk
- 4 tablespoons Irish butter (room temperature)
- Additional Irish butter (for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C).
- Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the cold buttermilk to the well in the center of the dry ingredients.
- Use a wooden spoon or dough scraper to mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently knead it two or three times.
- Score the top with a sharp knife to allow steam to escape.
- Bake for about 30 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool slightly on a wire rack before slicing and spreading with creamy Irish butter.
Notes
For a nuttier flavor, substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour. If buttermilk is unavailable, mix regular milk with vinegar to achieve similar tanginess.
